Three's company when seeking unanimity.

چکیده
R andom searches are routinely used in many algorithms, for instance, when looking for the shortest path connecting 100 cities or for ordering genomes in a most-parsimonious descendency tree. In this issue of PNAS, Matsen and Nowak (1) use a random search for another type of problem, that of finding coherence rather than optimality. The task thus consists of reaching unanimity. The proposed solution is outrageously simple: Keep switching until you agree with two others, then stop. Under a wide set of conditions, this slapdash recipe works.

The unanimous voting rule is not the political equivalent to market exchange
The unanimous voting rule is often viewed as analogous to voluntary market exchange. This paper demonstrates that when third-party pecuniary effects exist, this analogy breaks down because unlike markets, unanimous voting requires compensation for these effects. Thus, efficient market outcomes typically will be rejected by the unanimous voting rule. Even when transactions costs are low enough t...
متن کاملPatients and Their Doctors a Study of General Practice
Two's company, three's none, or so they say. The relationship between general practice and its other two bedfellows in the National Health Service (local health authority and hospital divisions) has always been an uneasy one. Recently much attention has been given to diagnosis of the malaise that afflicts the family doctor service, hampers recruitment to its ranks, and leads to eruption of disc...
متن کاملThree's company: co-crystallization of a self-assembled S(4) metallacyclophane with two diastereomeric metallacycle intermediates.
Three discrete supramolecular self-assembled arsenic(iii) complexes including an unusual S(4)-symmetric tetranuclear [As(4)L(2)Cl(4)] metallacyclophane and two diastereomeric cis/trans-[As(2)LCl(2)] metallacycle intermediates co-crystallize within a single crystal lattice.
متن کاملFrom Consumer Decision to Market Share - Unanimity of Majority?
We use a general cellular automata model to study the consumer decision-making process. Within this generalmodelweuse threedi erent rules governingword-of-mouthcommunication (w-o-m), onemajority rule and two unanimity rules, and ask the question if di erences between these three w-o-m rules, introduced on the microscopic level, will manifest on the macroscopic level. We show that in the model w...
متن کاملStrategic Voting over Strategic Proposals
Prior research on “strategic voting” has reached the conclusion that unanimity rule is uniquely bad: it results in destruction of information, and hence makes voters worse off. We show that this conclusion depends critically on the assumption that the issue being voted on is exogenous, i.e., independent of the voting rule used. We depart from the existing literature by endogenizing the proposal...
